The Texas Lottery launched in 1992, and generated more than $1 billion in ticket sales in its first year. Today, players can choose from multi-state games, a variety of state draw games, and scratch tickets.
More than 60% of money from ticket sales funds prizes. In addition, the Texas Lottery contributes its proceeds to education and veterans. Since the lottery started, billions in proceeds have gone into the Foundation School Fund.
You have 180 days from the date of the draw to collect your winnings.
The Texas Lottery is not responsible for lost, damaged, or stolen tickets. Keep lottery tickets in a safe place. Signing your ticket helps prove you own it in case you lose it.
No, you can only buy tickets in person at authorized retailers.
Yes. Lottery winnings in Texas are subject to federal income taxes (but not state taxes). The lottery also withholds a percentage of certain lottery winnings for federal tax purposes, and reports any lottery winnings of $600 or more to the IRS as long as the payout is at least 300 times the amount of the wager.
Check our Tax Information section for more details.
You must be 18 or older to purchase and redeem lottery tickets.
You can pick from Lotto Texas, Texas Two Step, Pick 3, All or Nothing, Cash Five, Daily 4, Powerball, and Mega Millions.
As of September 1, 2017, winners of $1 million or more may choose to remain anonymous. Winners of prizes less than $1 million do not have this option, and their details can be disclosed in a public records request.
Lottery proceeds go toward education and veteran programs in Texas.
